Rome's Mobile Squad has arrested two people accused of espionage and gathering of classified information on behalf of an alleged agent of Russian secret services.

The Carabinieri Mobile Squad, with the support of the Special Intervention Group and the Rome Regional Directorate, has carried out two precautionary measures at the request of the Rome Prosecutor's Office. The two suspects are accused of "espionage of secret information", "disclosure of information whose publication is prohibited" and "unauthorised access to a computer or telematic system".
The investigation has made it possible to gather serious evidence of guilt against the main suspect, a 59-year-old former member of the national intelligence service and former officer of the Carabinieri. The man is alleged to have conducted espionage activities on behalf of and in the interest of an alleged agent of Russian secret services, who enjoys dual diplomatic asylum on the national territory.
The latter, sole interlocutor of the alleged Russian agent, gathered and disclosed to him information of interest through six sources, among which four active-duty military personnel engaged in assignments characterised by a high degree of confidentiality. The latter are held responsible for having provided information that, for reasons of national security and/or for internal or international political interest of the State, must remain secret.
The precautionary measure is the result of a complex investigative activity, launched in May 2025, which led to the opening of two criminal proceedings respectively before the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Military Prosecutor's Office of Rome, linked to each other pursuant to article 371 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
