Rome police have arrested two people accused of transmitting classified information to a Russian agent. The operation was conducted in collaboration with the capital's public prosecutor's office.
The main suspect is a 59-year-old former carabinieri officer, previously employed in the intelligence sector. According to investigators, the man allegedly sold confidential data to a Russian agent in exchange for payment, obtaining the information from internal sources. Among these sources are four active members of the Italian armed forces.
The charges include the passing of protected data and unauthorised access to computer systems and telecommunication services. The Russian agent involved presumably enjoys diplomatic immunity in Italy.
The Russian embassy in Rome has not released immediate comments to Reuters and AFP news agencies.
