Italian police have arrested two people accused of passing classified information to a Russian secret service agent. The main suspect is a former Carabinieri officer.

Italian law enforcement has detained two individuals who allegedly passed data covered by secrecy to an operative of the Russian secret service. This was announced by the Rome police headquarters and the capital's public prosecutor's office.
The main suspect is a 59-year-old man, a former officer of the Carabinieri, who had previously worked within the intelligence community. The charges include the transfer of protected information and unauthorised access to computer and telecommunications systems.
According to investigators, the former military officer would have received money in exchange for the delivery of information obtained through his own sources. Among these sources are four members currently serving in the Italian army.
The Russian agent at the centre of the investigation reportedly enjoys diplomatic immunity on Italian territory.
The Moscow embassy in Rome provided no immediate comments to either Reuters or AFP.
