Italian judicial authorities have brought serious accusations against two former operatives of the national secret services. The military and civil prosecutors in Rome contend that the two transferred classified data to the Russian Federation, including projects concerning NATO.
The investigation has brought to light recordings of telephone intercepts. In one of these audio recordings, one of the suspects explicitly mentions assignments related to the Holy See. The sentence reported in the court documents reads: "I received a task relating to the Vatican".
The inquiry concerns intelligence activities conducted on behalf of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Russia, better known as the GRU. The documents transmitted reportedly concerned strategic and defence matters of the Atlantic Alliance.
