On Tuesday, 7 July, in Rome, law enforcement stopped a former operative of the national intelligence services. The measure was taken on the accusation of acting as an informant for Russia.
Investigators contend that the man had established a relationship with a citizen of the Russian Federation present in Italian territory with diplomatic status. According to investigative hypotheses, the latter is actually an operative of Moscow's intelligence services. The former Italian agent allegedly received financial compensation in exchange for the delivery of classified data, whose confidentiality was essential to the country's security.
To obtain the material subsequently transmitted, the 59-year-old made use of a network of six collaborators. Among these, a second individual has been arrested, whilst the other five are under investigation. Four of those involved are uniformed personnel still in service, employed in positions that required the utmost confidentiality regarding the activities carried out and information acquired.
