Safe Ferragosto in Rome: 30,000 identified, 106 arrests and 16 venues sanctioned
The State Police concluded the summer season with over 30,000 people identified, 106 arrests and 300 reported in the Rome area. Major operation on 14 and 15 August with 500 officers.
Major Ferragosto operation: 500 officers across lakes and Roman coastline
The Rome Questura deployed over 500 State Police officers on 14 and 15 August to guarantee security in the main tourist destinations in the province, across lakes and coastline. This was reported by questure.poliziadistato.it, which published the overall balance sheet for the entire summer season.
In 36 hours of continuous service, officers identified approximately 2,500 people, of whom 433 were found in police force databases. The activity was directed primarily at individuals identified on the basis of specific indicators, with preventative purposes.
Among the approximately 500 officers deployed was also a contingent of approximately 300 trainee officers, assigned to the Rome Questura by the Department of Public Security for the completion of their training cycle.
Road, railway and maritime checks
Approximately 1,300 vehicles were checked along the main road routes. The fines issued mainly concerned failure to use seatbelts and irregularities regarding periodic vehicle inspections.
On railway lines leading to bathing destinations on the Roman coastline, railway police reinforced their services operating in coordination with Questura patrols. Preventative checks focused on identifying and neutralising possible risk factors, with particular attention to youth deviance phenomena in group contexts, previously associated with episodes of disturbance to public peace and, in some cases, with acts constituting crimes.
River police personnel, with boats and jet skis, oversaw the safety of bathers in lake areas as well, whilst plain-clothes officers operated in the most crowded beach areas.
All activities were monitored from above thanks to drones from the General Prevention Office and Public Assistance of the Questura and to aircraft from the First Flight Section of the State Police, with real-time remodulation of ground personnel deployment.
Venue checks: 4 sanctions on Ferragosto night
In the Ferragosto operation alone, over 26 business activities were subject to verification. Four sanctions were issued for regulatory violations, including irregularities in the occupation of public land and failure to comply with closing times provided for in current regulations.
On the evening of 14 August, particular attention was paid to beach parties, including those with fireworks, given the high temperatures and fire risk.
The administrative police carried out targeted checks at some venues in the affected areas, verifying compliance with regulations concerning licences and safety.
Summer season balance: 106 arrests and 5 licences suspended
The enhanced territorial control plan, launched from mid-May with reinforcement of staffing at the Commissariats of Anzio, Civitavecchia, Ostia, Fiumicino and Ladispoli, produced significant results over the entire summer season.
From 1 June, approximately 30,000 people have been identified. Arrests reached 106, to which approximately 300 reported persons are added. The most frequently contested crimes are drug trafficking and predatory crimes attributable to petty crime.
Approximately 150 foreign citizens were taken to the Immigration Office for checks on residence matters. Of these, 6 were subject to an expulsion order: 3 placed in a Reception Centre for Repatriation (CPR) and 10 reached by a Questore order with a requirement to leave the national territory.
Administrative police squads subjected 35 venues to checks, including accommodation facilities, gaming halls and entertainment activities. Sixteen sanctions were issued for violations in the registration of guests or irregularities with respect to sector regulations. The Rome Questore ordered the suspension of 5 licences pursuant to article 100 of the Single Text of Public Security Laws.
Anti-abusivism operations in Ostia and Ladispoli
Operations against abusivism were not lacking. In Ostia and Ladispoli, joint operations between the State Police and local police forces — coordinated by the respective territorially competent Commissariats — led to the removal of illegal settlements.
