The incident dates back to Monday evening. Filippo leaves the flat at around 19:00 and returns at 22:00. He calls emergency services claiming he cannot open the door, which is locked from the inside, and requests assistance from the fire service. Once the door is opened, rescue workers find Lorella Capano lying on the ground, lifeless.
The young man shows surprise, but his account soon begins to unravel. Following hours of interrogation, Oldani allegedly provided conflicting versions of events. According to the investigators' reconstruction, the 20-year-old had engaged in a violent quarrel with his mother before strangling her, then left the flat and fabricated a plausible story upon his return. The carabinieri and the investigative unit pieced together the picture within hours, thanks to images from surveillance cameras and testimony from a resident who stated he had heard screams. On Lorella Capano's body, which was to be subjected to an autopsy in the hours that followed, signs of a struggle were found.
The name Filippo Oldani had previously appeared in newspaper pages, in very different circumstances. In 2021, when he was 15 years old, the boy had been interviewed by reporters from Repubblica outside the vaccination hub at Palazzo delle Scintille in Milan. "It has been a terrible year, I cannot take any more of remote learning, I got vaccinated to avoid it and I hope that all my classmates think the same way as I do," he had stated at the time. The interview also mentioned "mum Lorella," who had accompanied him to receive his first dose. "Without the Green Pass I cannot do anything, at the airport in Sardinia they would not let me enter the bar for lunch. I would like to avoid being excluded from other activities, both at school and elsewhere," the young man had added.
