A 26-year-old man has been arrested by Florence's Mobile Squad after attempting to defraud an elderly woman by posing as a member of the Guardia di Finanza.

Florence's Mobile Squad has arrested a 26-year-old for attempted fraud with aggravating circumstances against an elderly woman, as reported by poliziadistato.it. The man had staged what is known as the "fake revenue officer" scam.
The mechanism was well-tested: the suspect telephoned the victim introducing himself as a member of the Guardia di Finanza, telling her that her car had been used to commit a robbery at a jewellery shop in the Tuscan capital. Applying this pressure, he warned her that a revenue officer would arrive at her home to carry out a search and recover all the gold to compare with the stolen goods.
The scam was interrupted when the man ordered the woman to send her husband to the barracks before the supposed revenue officer's arrival. At that point, the elderly woman realised the deception and called the police emergency number.
Investigators from the Questura intervened quickly, positioning officers both outside the building and inside. Shortly afterwards they saw the fake revenue officer arrive by taxi, ring the bell and enter the entrance to the condominium. At that point the arrest was made.
