Two arrests in Florence for "fake carabiniere" fraud: victim a 90-year-old woman

The Florence mobile squad has detained two men — a 24-year-old and a 17-year-old — responsible for defrauding a 90-year-old woman using the so-called "fake carabiniere" technique, as reported by Google News IT — Crime (it).

Officers had noticed a suspicious vehicle in the city centre: the registration plate had already been flagged as the vehicle was believed to be used by people engaged in fraud against elderly people. The police therefore decided to follow the vehicle.

The car then moved outside the city, stopping in front of a building. The passenger got out with a mobile phone in his hand, rang the intercom and entered the building. Shortly afterwards he came out with a bag in his hand, got back into the car and the driver drove off quickly.

The two were stopped immediately. They had with them 7,200 euros in cash and dozens of gold jewels. The 17-year-old also had in his pocket a metal badge with the word "Police" written on it.

The investigation reconstructed the fraud scheme: previously the two had contacted the victim by telephone, posing as members of the police force. They told her that her son had been arrested for an alleged jewellery robbery and that a representative would come to her house to compare her valuables with the stolen goods. The woman then handed over her jewels to the 17-year-old.

The two fraudsters were arrested. The stolen jewels, estimated at between 70,000 and 80,000 euros, were returned to the elderly woman.
