Comprehensive controls conducted by the National Institute of Social Security (INPS) together with the Guardia di Finanza have brought to light widespread fraud against the Italian State relating to citizen's income. Since the beginning of 2025, the checks have identified over 3,300 recipients who were improperly receiving the subsidy.
According to reports from Südtirol News, the economic damage established so far amounts to more than €43 million. The irregularities concern two main categories of beneficiaries.
The first group includes those who, at the time of application, had failed to declare criminal convictions or specific prior offences. Checks on these individuals covered over 4,300 suspect cases. In more than 82% of the situations examined, the anomalies proved to be well-founded. The estimated damage for this type of fraud exceeds €8.7 million.
The second tier of controls concerned holders of active VAT numbers and people with company positions. These conditions are incompatible with the receipt of state aid. In this area, over 2,600 irregularities were established, with the amount of improperly received sums exceeding €36 million.
For all individuals involved, proceedings have been initiated for the revocation of the benefit and recovery of the sums paid out. In cases with criminal relevance, reports have been submitted to the competent authorities.
INPS and the Guardia di Finanza consider the results obtained as confirmation of the effectiveness of data exchange between public administrations. Both entities have announced their intention to intensify controls further to protect public resources.
