The removal of 80 vials of fentanyl from the Israelitico hospital in the capital has drawn the attention of the Carabinieri Special Operations Group. General Vincenzo Molinese, head of the Raggruppamento operativo speciale of the Arma, expressed serious concern in the anti-mafia commission.
According to the commander, this episode demonstrates that someone intends to obtain the powerful opioid substance. The investigation will have to determine whether the stolen goods will be placed on the illicit market through online platforms.
Molinese clarified that at the moment in Italy there are no traces of organised crime infiltration in the trafficking of this narcotic, but pointed out that the absence of evidence does not amount to certainty. He also warned that, although the situation is not as alarming as in the United States and Canada, where overdose deaths have reached epidemic proportions, it is nevertheless necessary to remain vigilant.
Fentanyl is a synthetic analgesic of opioid origin, much more potent than heroin and morphine. Its illicit use is causing a growing number of deaths in several Western countries, making control of medical supplies a priority for the authorities.
