Jeweller from Grinzane Cavour imprisoned: Supreme Court rejects appeal
Jeweller Mario Roggero, 72, has been imprisoned after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against a sentence of 14 years and nine months for shooting three robbers in his shop in 2021.
On 28 April four years ago, three criminals burst into the jewellery shop in Grinzane Cavour, in the province of Cuneo. Roggero responded with a pistol, killing two attackers and seriously wounding the third. The lower courts ruled out self-defence, deeming the reaction disproportionate.
Before entering detention, the defendant published a video on social media. In the message he thanked supporters who had accumulated during the trial and asked them to continue fighting for stricter legislation against crime. "You will be my voice," he declared.
His lawyers have announced an appeal to the Strasbourg Court, hoping for a different assessment from the European judges.
