A seventy-two-year-old jeweller from the province of Cuneo has begun serving his sentence in a detention facility in Turin. The decision became unavoidable after judges at the Supreme Court rejected an appeal filed by his lawyers, confirming the fourteen-year and nine-month sentence imposed by the court of appeal.
The man was found guilty of killing two criminals and wounding a third on 28 April 2021, when three armed individuals broke into his shop located in Gallo di Grinzane Cavour. The defendant had always maintained that he acted to protect his wife, but prosecutors had found no grounds for applying the self-defence provisions.
Before surrendering, the jeweller posted a short video on social media. In the message he thanked those who had supported him throughout the legal proceedings: "I thank all those who stood by me, both materially and as human beings." He then urged his supporters to continue a legislative battle: "You will have to carry forward a law that truly opposes injustices and increasingly rampant crime. You will be my voice."
