Supreme Court: organised crime aggravating factor recognised for murder of Giulio Giaccio
The Court of Cassation upheld the appeals of the General Prosecutor's Office in Naples, represented by Dr Correra, and the District Anti-Mafia Department of Naples, with deputy prosecutor Giuseppe Visone. ANSA Cronaca reported this. The appeals requested recognition of the organised crime aggravating factor against Salvatore Cammarota, Roberto Perrone and Carlo Nappi, who are believed to be the instigators and material perpetrators of the murder of Giulio Giaccio.
Giaccio, 25 years old, was murdered on 30 July 2000 with gunshots and then dissolved in acid, the victim of a case of mistaken identity. He was killed because he was confused with someone named Salvatore, believed to be guilty of having a romantic relationship with the sister of Cammarota, an affiliate of the Polverino clan.
"After 25 years, finally, there is a sign of justice," declared lawyers Alessandro Motta and Concetta Chiricone, who have been fighting for years to have Giaccio recognised as an innocent victim of the Mafia. The two lawyers expressed the hope that the Court of Assise of Appeal, before which the new trial will be held, "will be able to evaluate all the elements in a sober and legitimate manner in order to fully do justice to this long-standing matter that has troubled the life of an entire family".
The lawyers also remembered Giulio's mother, who died before the latest judgment: "Until the end she asked for justice for her son, killed in a brutal manner by the Mafia at only 25 years old, due to a case of mistaken identity".
