The Carabinieri Special Squad has arrested two people suspected of espionage on behalf of Russian secret services. A former member of Italian intelligence services allegedly collected classified information from active military sources.

The Carabinieri Special Squad, with the support of the Special Intervention Squad and the Regional Directorate of Rome of the Corps, has arrested two people at the request of the Rome Prosecutor's Office. The two are accused of "espionage of secret information", "disclosure of information whose dissemination is prohibited" and "unauthorised access to a computer or telecommunications system".
The investigation has gathered serious evidence of guilt against the main suspect, a 59-year-old former member of the national intelligence service and retired officer of the Carabinieri. The man allegedly carried out espionage activities on behalf of an alleged agent of Russian intelligence services, who enjoyed dual asylum on national territory.
The main suspect, the sole contact of the alleged Russian agent, collected and disclosed to the latter information of interest through six sources, including four military personnel in active service engaged in assignments characterised by a high degree of confidentiality. These sources are believed to be responsible for having provided information which, for reasons of national security and/or for reasons of internal or international political interest of the State, must remain secret.
The precautionary measure is the result of a complex investigative activity, begun in May 2025, which led to the opening of two criminal proceedings, respectively at the Prosecutor's Office and the Military Prosecutor's Office of Rome, connected to each other pursuant to article 371 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
