Italian authorities have arrested a former Carabinieri officer and an accomplice for transmitting classified information to a Russian agent in exchange for money.

The Rome Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday 7 July the arrest of two people accused of transmitting classified information to a Russian agent. The main suspect is a 59-year-old former officer who had served in the Carabinieri and in secret services.
The charges include the transmission of confidential data, as well as unauthorised access to computer and telecommunications systems. The investigation began in May 2025 and five other people are under investigation.
According to the authorities, the 59-year-old allegedly received money in exchange for delivering information obtained from his sources, including four military personnel serving in the Italian armed forces. The Russian agent involved enjoys diplomatic protection in Italy.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stated that the investigation helped reveal Moscow's true position towards Rome. In a post on X, the minister described the case as part of a wider network that includes external enemies and internal traitors, ready to sell information for economic gain.
The Italian government has provided military and political assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022.
