In the course of implementing sanctions introduced following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Italian authorities have seized assets belonging to Russian oligarchs with an estimated value of approximately two billion euros. The news was made public by the Guardia di Finanza (GDF) on the occasion of the body's 252nd anniversary of its founding.
Among the assets seized are real estate, vehicles, yachts, works of art and shareholdings. The operation falls within the broader framework of restrictive measures adopted by the European Union against the Russian Federation.
In the period between January 2025 and May 2026, the GDF also identified cases of fraud linked to funds from the European Union and Italy totalling more than 1.6 billion euros. During the same time period, assets valued at 4.7 billion euros were seized, deemed to be the proceeds of tax evasion and concealment.
According to data provided by the Guardia di Finanza, in the 17 months examined, almost 8,300 individuals were identified who had failed to declare part of their income, in addition to more than 47,400 people employed irregularly or illegally. The investigations led to the charging of over 20,400 individuals for tax offences.
