Domenico Caliendo's mother: "Oppido's laughter at interrogation is disrespectful"

Domenico's mother: "Even a smile is unacceptable in the face of this tragedy"

According to ANSA Cronaca, Patrizia Mercolino, mother of Domenico Caliendo, expressed strong disapproval after reading the transcripts of the preliminary interrogation of cardiac surgeon Guido Oppido, which took place on 21 May.

The young Domenico died on 21 February at the Monaldi hospital in Naples following an unsuccessful heart transplant. Oppido, the doctor who performed the surgery, is currently under investigation, among other things, for falsification in relation to the completion of the child's medical records.

"I read the transcripts of Guido Oppido's interrogation and I find it unbearable and disrespectful that in the face of a tragedy, such as that of my son, he even laughed," Mercolino stated.

From the transcripts it emerges that the deputy prosecutor Giuseppe Tittaferrante, who heads the case file, called the doctor to account during the hearing: "This is a case involving a two-year-old child who died — let us avoid laughing". Oppido replied: "I am not laughing. I do everything except laugh".

"Even a smile is intolerable," Mercolino said with a firm voice, "in the face of what happened, in the face of this tragedy".
