'Ndrangheta fugitive arrested in Genoa: convicted for 12 years in Piromalli case

The Mobile Squad of Reggio Calabria, with the support of their Genoa counterparts, arrested on Thursday afternoon a 65-year-old man from Gioia Tauro who had been a fugitive since 30 November 2024. This is reported by questure.poliziadistato.it.
The man had evaded execution of a restrictive measure issued by the Prosecutor General of the Republic at the Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria, following a final conviction to twelve years' imprisonment for mafia association. The sentence had emerged from the operation known as Provvidenza, conducted by the Carabinieri's ROS and relating to the Piromalli 'ndrangheta family. A subsequent cumulative measure recalculated the residual sentence as eight years and two months, recognising the continuity link between the offences.
He also faced a conviction in the Spazio di Libertà trial, an operation by the Reggio Mobile Squad coordinated by the local Anti-Mafia District Directorate. In that proceeding he was held responsible for having facilitated the evasion of Crea Giuseppe, leader of the homonymous cosca active in Rizziconi, and Ferraro Giuseppe, a prominent member of the Ferraro-Raccosta 'ndrina. The two had been captured on 29 January 2016 inside an underground bunker in the countryside of Maropati, in the province of Reggio Calabria.
The search for the fugitive had begun with the analysis of data on past associations and movements, also provided by colleagues from the Carabinieri. Information gathered in recent days had suggested the possibility that the man had moved out of Calabria.
The Reggio investigators, in close collaboration with the Genoa Mobile Squad and with constant coordination by the Prosecutor General and the Anti-Mafia Directorate of Reggio Calabria and the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Genoa, identified the wanted man in a condominium located in a residential area of the Ligurian capital. The raid took place immediately, leading to his capture.
At the time of arrest, the man was in possession of a false identity document.
