Mario Adinolfi, a member of the Popolo della Famiglia party, has been arrested and placed under electronic surveillance. Roman magistrates are investigating him for allegedly defrauding the tax authority of approximately 400,000 euros and deceiving dozens of people with an investment scheme linked to sports betting.
The investigation, entrusted to the Guardia di Finanza, concerns an initiative promoted on social media through which Adinolfi allegedly collected sums of up to 150,000 euros from private individuals. Participants were promised profits linked to sports betting. According to the accusation, the money was not declared and was used to purchase luxury goods such as watches, boats and houses, as well as to cover travel expenses.
From his home, where he is confined, Adinolfi issued a statement denying all charges and contesting the manner in which he has been treated. He highlighted the differences with the case of Valter Lavitola, an entrepreneur involved in an assault on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, who remained free despite the investigation into alleged mass murder. Adinolfi spoke of disparities in treatment between himself and other persons under investigation, complaining of an unequal application of justice.
The political figure also alleged that documents from his case file had been unlawfully disclosed to the press, triggering an immediate media trial. He accused certain television programmes and a lawyer of having constructed testimony against him through pressure on potential witnesses.
