22-year-old arrested in Brindisi after sexual assault and robbery
State Police in Lecce have arrested a 22-year-old man residing in the province of Brindisi, believed to be responsible for sexual assault, robbery, attempted extortion and resistance to a public official. This is reported by Google News IT — Crime (it), on the basis of a statement from Lecce Police Headquarters.
The investigation was initiated by a report filed on 14 August at Lecce Police Headquarters by a woman. According to her account, the victim was with her partner near a sandwich kiosk when the attacker, taking advantage of the man's brief absence, first groped her and then snatched her bag containing her mobile phone. The woman was thrown to the ground and dragged, sustaining multiple abrasions. Her partner, who intervened, put the young man to flight in the direction of the railway station.
The breakthrough in the Mobile Squad's investigation came when the victim attempted to call her smartphone: the attacker answered, proposing the return of the phone at Brindisi railway station in exchange for 50 euros and a sexual favour.
Officers from Lecce Police Headquarters set up a stakeout at Brindisi railway station, where the 22-year-old was identified and recognised by the victim. Upon seeing the police officers, the young man reacted with kicks and punches. After being restrained, he was transported by emergency medical personnel to the local hospital, where tests revealed the use of alcohol and narcotics. The officers involved in the intervention sustained injuries assessed as requiring ten days to heal.
The duty Public Prosecutor of Brindisi District Court ordered the transfer of the young man to Brindisi Prison, where the arrest was subsequently validated. A Compulsory Removal Order from Lecce was also proposed to the Questore (Police Commissioner), Dr. Lionetti, as a preventive measure against the man.
It is clarified that the measures adopted during the investigative phase do not imply any responsibility of those under investigation and that the information is provided in respect of the presumption of innocence.
