Milan: 160 arrests following looting incidents — most of those detained are minors

One hundred and sixty arrests were carried out in Milan within four hours as groups of young people with covered faces looted shops and clashed with police forces in the city centre, according to To Vima. 80 per cent of those arrested are minors.

The young demonstrators targeted a supermarket, a well-known department store, a fast-food restaurant and a major sportswear chain. They subsequently threw tables and chairs at police, while causing significant damage to bus stops.

Due to the incidents, Milan's cathedral closed earlier than its scheduled opening hours. The metro station at Piazza Duomo also remains closed as a precautionary measure.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni convened an emergency meeting on public order management. Milan's Mayor Beppe Sala stated that he "unequivocally condemns all those responsible for these criminal acts, without any supposed understanding of something absolutely incomprehensible".

According to the authorities, criminal prosecution is likely to be pursued against minors for property damage and resisting law enforcement. Police officers injured during the clashes told Italian media that every possible effort must be made to address the situation, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of residents and tourists.
