Son of Catanese mafia boss dies in hospital

Vincenzo Salvatore Santapaola died overnight at Parma's Maggiore Hospital, where he had been transferred due to serious health conditions, ANSA Cronaca reports. He would have turned 57 on 2 June next.

Santapaola was imprisoned in Parma prison under Article 41-bis regime. He was serving a sentence for mafia association and a 30-year prison sentence for the murder of his cousin Angelo Santapaola, committed in 2007.

He was the son of Benedetto Santapaola, a top-level member of Catanese Cosa Nostra, who died on 2 March last in the prison hospital ward of San Paolo Hospital in Milan. The boss was detained in Opera prison, also under Article 41-bis regime, where he was serving a life sentence.

Like his father, Vincenzo Salvatore Santapaola left instructions that his body be cremated.
