On the morning of 14 July, 500 law enforcement officers launched a large-scale anti-mafia operation in the Reggio Calabria territory. Police and military personnel executed restrictive measures against 79 people, believed to be linked to historic 'ndrangheta clans. The investigation, conducted under the direction of the District Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of Reggio Calabria, targeted the De Stefano, Tegano, Condello and other criminal organisations active in the area.
Of the 79 suspects, 73 were taken into custody and 6 were placed under house arrest. They face charges of mafia association, international drug trafficking, extortion, robbery and illegal weapons possession. Investigators believe that the criminal organisations controlled various economic sectors, from drug trafficking to extortion targeting local merchants and entrepreneurs.
The precautionary custody orders were issued by the investigating judge of the Reggio Calabria court at the request of the district anti-mafia prosecutor's office. The operation represents another significant blow to the criminal structures rooted in the heart of Calabria.
