A 43-year-old man has been imprisoned for the murder of Giacomo Mongiello, killed by rifle shots in the city centre.

The Mobile Squad of Foggia executed a custodial precautionary order issued by the judge for preliminary investigations of the Daun capital. The recipient is a 43-year-old man accused of killing Giacomo Mongiello, 45 years old, on the evening of 2 August 2024. This was announced by the Questura of Foggia.
The victim was walking in the streets near the city centre when an individual on a dark electric pedal-assisted bicycle approached him from behind. The attacker, covered by a peaked cap and face mask, wore dark clothing and carried a rifle. He fired at least two shots, then fled on the bicycle. Mongiello was urgently transported to the city hospital, where he died after two days.
Witnesses witnessed the killer's escape, and images from public and private surveillance cameras were acquired immediately after the incident. During the flight the murderer lost a small cap, seized by the investigators. Technical analysis revealed gunshot residue and biological traces on the item of clothing.
An anonymous call to 112 a few days after the murder indicated the 43-year-old as responsible. The man, questioned by judicial police, provided statements full of contradictions and refused to provide a biological sample voluntarily. DNA was taken forcibly by order of the judicial authority and compared with that found on the cap: the match proved positive.
The investigation revealed meticulous planning of the crime. The suspect allegedly chose an electric bicycle to move quickly even in pedestrian areas and to bypass traffic, then destroyed it a few metres from his home to prevent further investigation.
The investigators analysed 218 cameras, monitored two areas with additional devices, examined telephone flows, questioned more than sixty people, carried out personal, home and digital searches, and compared dozens of genetic samples. Colleagues from the Central Operations Service also collaborated.
