Trial for the murder in Fontaniva: hearing scheduled for 30 September
Padua's Court of Assize has scheduled the first hearing for 30 September against Moreno Violetto, a 45-year-old carpenter from Fontaniva, accused of the murder of Fatos Cenaj. This is reported by rainews.it.
Cenaj, 59 years old, an Albanian citizen and former prison guard in his country of origin, had been struck by a single gunshot on 8 June 2025 in Via Casoni Basse, a country road in the Padua area, whilst travelling to work at an educational farm. The man, who had been in Italy for two years to be reunited with his wife and daughter, died in hospital two days later. The two were neighbours.
The prosecution contests against Violetto the charge of wilful murder aggravated by premeditation and trivial motives. According to investigators, the accused had purchased components online to assemble a rudimentary weapon and had obtained clothing to disguise himself and the bicycle used to approach the victim.
Despite having provided a false alibi in an attempt to obstruct the investigation, surveillance cameras in the area had captured him on a bicycle — disguised — along the same roads travelled by Cenaj. During a search of the shed adjacent to his residence, clothing, shoes, a helmet and a bicycle were found that matched those captured in the footage.
During a prison interrogation, Violetto admitted the existence of disputes with the victim over neighbourhood issues, including a violent argument that occurred a few days before the crime. The accused has been in custody since 13 December last year.
