Fatal ambush on Via Castions di Strada: victim struck multiple times to the chest

A man of Moroccan origin, born in 1961, died Wednesday evening in Udine after being attacked on Via Castions di Strada. According to ANSA Cronaca, the suspected perpetrator is a 32-year-old, also of Moroccan origin and resident in Rive d'Arcano, still at large at the time of publication. Law enforcement considers him potentially armed.

The alarm was raised at 19:48. According to an initial reconstruction, the victim was returning home with shopping bags when he was ambushed by the attacker, who had been hiding behind a hedge. The man reportedly struck him repeatedly to the chest with a sharp object before fleeing on foot in the surrounding area.

Emergency medical personnel from 118 arrived immediately and transported the injured man urgently to Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Udine, where he died shortly after admission. His condition appeared extremely serious from the outset.

A screwdriver, found next to the body, was seized by carabinieri: according to initial investigations, it could be the murder weapon, as it bore traces of blood. However, the possibility that a knife was used has not been ruled out. Further investigations into the circumstances and the weapon used are underway.

Carabinieri from the Udine Provincial Command, personnel from the Scientific Investigations Unit and deputy prosecutor Letizia Puppa attended the scene of the homicide. The area was cordoned off to allow investigations and collection of evidence useful to reconstructing the facts.

Investigators are focusing their attention on the personal relationships between the suspected attacker and the victim's family. The 32-year-old had reportedly become infatuated with the deceased man's sister, a 38-year-old woman, who arrived at the scene of the murder and was questioned by investigators. The woman reportedly ended the relationship approximately one month ago, but the man did not accept the end of their relationship.

Three days before the murder, the suspect had reportedly appeared at the woman's workplace in an attempt to meet her; when refused, he allegedly made death threats. Investigators are also examining an incident that occurred the day before, when another family member's car was allegedly damaged.

Carabinieri are conducting a thorough search of the area, obtaining footage from surveillance cameras and collecting statements from anyone who may have witnessed the attack or the flight of the suspected perpetrator.
