Bongiorni murder in Massa, investigation closed: two adults charged with wilful murder

The prosecutor in Massa has completed the investigation into the killing of Giacomo Bongiorni, a 47-year-old construction worker resident in Mirteto. The man was fatally struck in the night between 11 and 12 April outside a commercial establishment in Piazza Palma, in the heart of the Tuscan city. The carpenter's son witnessed the scene.

Shortly after the incident, officers arrested two young adults of Romanian nationality: Eduard Carutasu and Alexandru Miron. They are charged with premeditated murder, as well as aggravated assault due to the involvement of minors.

Subsequently, the investigation expanded to include Gabriele Tognocchi, brother of the victim's partner. He was present at the scene that evening and intervened to defend Bongiorni. He faces a charge of aggravated assault.

Based on analysis of surveillance camera footage and statements from those present, the initial account of events—according to which the group had broken a bottle on the ground before the assault—appears to find no confirmation.

Separate investigations remain open by the Prosecutor's Office for Minors in Genoa into three other young people, all friends of the two arrested men: one of these, a former boxer, is currently in custody, whilst the other two are under investigation and at liberty.
