A man of Moroccan origin, born in 1961, died Wednesday evening in Udine after being attacked in via Castions di Strada. According to ANSA Cronaca, the alleged attacker is a 32-year-old, also of Moroccan origin and resident in Rive d'Arcano, currently being sought by the carabinieri. Investigators believe the man may still be armed.
The alarm was raised at 19:48. According to the reconstruction by investigators, the victim was returning home with shopping bags when he was caught by surprise by the attacker, lying in wait behind a hedge. The 32-year-old reportedly struck the man multiple times in the chest with a sharp object before fleeing on foot in the surrounding area. A screwdriver with possible traces of blood was found beside the body and seized by the carabinieri, although further verification is underway regarding the weapon used: some investigators do not rule out the use of a knife.
Paramedics from the 118 emergency service arrived immediately at the scene. The victim was transported urgently to Santa Maria della Misericordia hospital in Udine, where he died shortly after admission. Carabinieri from the Provincial Command, the Scientific Investigation unit, and deputy prosecutor Letizia Puppa responded to the crime scene. The area was isolated to allow for examination and collection of evidence useful to reconstructing the facts.
Investigators are focusing attention on the relationship between the alleged attacker and the victim's family. The 32-year-old had become infatuated with the deceased's sister, a 38-year-old woman who went to the murder scene and was questioned by investigators. The woman reportedly ended the relationship approximately one month ago, but the man did not accept the separation.
Three days before the murder, the suspect allegedly appeared at the woman's workplace in an attempt to meet her. When faced with her refusal, he reportedly made explicit death threats. Investigators are also examining an incident that occurred the day before the attack, when the car of another family member of the woman was allegedly deliberately damaged.
Carabinieri are combing the area, acquiring images from surveillance cameras and collecting testimony from any potential witnesses to the attack or the suspect's flight.
