Murder of Lorena Isceri in Barberino del Mugello: 40 minutes of negotiation before Vella's suicide
A 24-year-old police officer spent 40 minutes trying to convince Federico Vella not to jump from the overpass on the A1 motorway. The man had already killed his ex-partner.
Police officer on her knees for 40 minutes: the attempt to save Vella after Lorena's murder
A negotiation lasting forty minutes, recorded on a service mobile phone and now part of the investigation file: corrierefiorentino.corriere.it reconstructs the moments that preceded Federico Vella's suicide on 4 September 2026, on the overpass of the A1 motorway in Barberino del Mugello, in the province of Florence.
Vella, a 36-year-old office worker from Florence, had shortly before killed his ex-partner Lorena Isceri, 45 years old, originally from Puglia, by throwing her from the same overpass.
Three crews from the Pian del Voglio motorway police, in the province of Bologna, arrived at the scene. It was Ilaria, a 24-year-old officer, who established direct contact with Vella, who is already beyond the guard rail and orders everyone not to come closer.
In the video, the police officer can be seen repeatedly calling out to the man, asking him to return to the road. Meanwhile, her colleagues realise that Lorena is already dead and is no longer in the car boot.
In the last ten minutes of the recording, the officer kneels down in front of Vella. "I've called your mum, don't worry, I'm asking you a favour, I've asked you to come to this other side, please come here," Ilaria says, while the other officers move away to avoid increasing the tension.
The attempt fails: Federico Vella jumps into the void and dies.
