Deadly ambush in Calabria: settling of scores in the timber sector suspected

A 24-year-old worker, Domenico Oppedisano, was shot dead on Monday morning in the countryside of San Pietro di Caridà, in the Reggio area, according to Corriere della Sera. The victim, who had been married for a year and was the father of a baby girl, was hit by multiple gunshots and died during transport to hospital.

The ambush occurred around eight o'clock in the morning at Prateria, a particularly isolated mountainous area with no witnesses. Oppedisano was driving to his workplace to carry out deforestation work, which he carried out together with his father.

According to initial reconstructions, one or more killers pulled up alongside the victim's vehicle and fired revolver shots. Oppedisano attempted to accelerate, but, wounded in vital areas, lost control of the car and went off a slope.

The motive hypothesised by investigators is a settling of scores linked to control of the forestry sector in the area. The victim had no criminal record, whereas his father Giuseppe had experienced legal problems in the past.

The investigation is being conducted by the carabinieri under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Palmi.
