In the countryside of the Sardinian municipality of Sarule, law enforcement blocked a drug-trafficking operation: nearly 700 kg of cannabis found, some of which altered with MDMB-PINACA.

In the countryside around Sarule, a centre in the Nuoro province, a police raid by law enforcement led to the detention of a 31-year-old man and the discovery of nearly seven hundred kilograms of narcotics. The operation was carried out last Friday by officers from the Ottana Police Commissariat, on the orders of the Nuoro Questore (Police Chief).
During the checks, officers discovered two cultivated areas, one of which housed approximately six thousand hemp shoots just sprouted, only a few centimetres tall. Forensic Police technicians analysed samples of the product found: one of them revealed the presence of MDMB-PINACA, an artificial molecule belonging to the family of synthetic cannabinoids, classified among hard drugs for its high potential for risk. Initial reconstructions indicate that a portion of the haul was deliberately laced with this compound.
The Department for Anti-Drug Policies reports that the consumption of MDMB-PINACA can generate states of disorientation, altered vision and profound drowsiness. The detainee, assisted by lawyers Giuseppe Putzu and Margherita Baragliu, appeared before the judge for preliminary investigations of the Nuoro Court, Giovanni Angelicchio. The defence argued that the level of active ingredients in the plants did not exceed the 0.6 per cent threshold set for industrial hemp. Despite this, the magistrate validated the detention and ordered the precautionary measure of house arrest.
The investigation is being directed by prosecutor Sandra Maria Benedetta Picicuto. Enquiries are continuing to clarify the exact type of substance, establish where the artificial cannabinoid came from and determine what the final destination of the production was.
