Padova: 36-year-old arrested after assault in emergency department

An Italian citizen aged 36 was arrested after assaulting three healthcare workers at the emergency department of Padova Civic Hospital. The man, under the influence of drugs, damaged medical equipment.

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, an Italian citizen aged 36 was arrested on Thursday 1 October in the morning at the emergency department of Padova Civic Hospital for aggravated resistance and assault on a public official, as well as for aggravated criminal damage. The man, who arrived by 118 ambulance in a state of severe agitation under the influence of narcotics, assaulted a doctor and two nurses by dragging and violently striking them.

Three healthcare workers sustained bruising judged to be healed respectively in 4 and 3 days. During the altercation, the 36-year-old tore out his intravenous access and monitoring leads in an attempt to escape, then hurled an ultrasound machine against the glass of a medicine cabinet, breaking both the equipment and the cabinet. Officers from the Anti-crime Police Division and the Flying Squad of Padova Police Headquarters, who arrived following notification by healthcare staff, contained the subject safely and permitted sedation.

The arrested man has numerous criminal convictions for aggravated robbery, aggravated theft, kidnapping, false reporting of a crime, grievous bodily harm and carrying weapons. A formal warning had also been issued against him by the Padova Police Commissioner as a preventive measure. Under Decree Law no. 23/2026 for the protection of healthcare and social healthcare professions, the 36-year-old was taken into custody at Due Palazzi remand prison in Padova pending trial by direct proceedings. He was also reported for the offence of interruption of a public service.
