Perugia, young thief arrested after assaulting off-duty police officer in supermarket

A 26-year-old man, a foreign national, has been arrested in Perugia. The man, previously reported to law enforcement, is accused of attempting to steal goods from a retail store and then assaulting the person who stopped him.

The incident took place a few days ago. A police officer, who was off duty, was in a commercial establishment when he saw the store's security personnel detain a suspicious customer. The young man had hidden various food products worth a combined total of more than 230 euros in a rucksack. When the security staff asked him to show the contents of the rucksack, the suspect displayed only part of the goods and then attempted to leave.

The officer, after identifying himself, intervened to stop the escape. The thief, however, reacted violently, striking the police officer and the security personnel in an attempt to gain his freedom. After a struggle, the officer managed to immobilise him and detain him until colleagues from the patrol units arrived.

At the police headquarters, numerous previous offences by the young man emerged concerning crimes against property, crimes against the person, crimes against the Public Administration, and drug-related offences. The Public Prosecutor ordered his arrest for improper robbery and resistance to a public official, with the application of a precautionary measure in the form of house arrest monitored via electronic bracelet, subsequently validated by the judge.
