Genoa's courthouse convenes today to deliver the verdict in the trial linked to the collapse of the Morandi viaduct, which occurred on 14 August 2018 and cost the lives of 43 people. The verdict comes eight years after the tragedy that profoundly affected the Ligurian city and the entire nation.
At the centre of today's hearing is Giovanni Castellucci, former chief executive of Autostrade per l'Italia, whom the prosecutor has requested be sentenced to 18 years in prison. The charges against him include multiple culpable homicide and culpable disaster, in relation to the failure to maintain the bridge and decisions made concerning the safety of the structure.
The failure of one of the viaduct's pillars caused the collapse of a section of the A10 motorway, with dozens of vehicles plunging from the structure. The investigation revealed problems linked to the management of the infrastructure and the responsibilities of company executives.
The trial has seen heated confrontation in court between the parties, with controversy also at the political level. Today the judge must decide the fate of Castellucci and the other defendants, including technicians and managers involved in the management of the bridge.
