Google News IT — Crime (it) reports that the Guardia di Finanza arrested a Bulgarian haulage driver at Civitavecchia port after discovering more than 85 kilogrammes of drugs hidden in a false compartment of the semi-trailer he was driving.
The vehicle had just disembarked from a motor ship coming from Barcelona when officers from the Guardia di Finanza Group, assisted by officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency, began a thorough inspection. Risk analysis conducted by the Guardia di Finanza, supported by information from the Economic-Financial Police Unit in Milan, had already directed attention to the driver.
What reinforced the financial police's suspicions was, according to a statement from the Fiamme Gialle, "the cautious behaviour of the haulage driver" during document verification. The officers therefore ordered a more detailed inspection, proceeding to empty the cargo.
At that stage, Ice and Frida, two drug detection dogs from the Fiumicino Group of the Fiamme Gialle, came into action. The canine units indicated the presence of drugs in the lower part of the semi-trailer, directing the financial police towards the platform bed. The inspection led to the discovery of a false compartment created in the structure of the vehicle itself.
Inside the cavity were hidden 53 vacuum-sealed bags containing marijuana and 26 blocks of cocaine, totalling over 85 kilogrammes. The estimated value of the cargo on the market exceeds 3 million euros.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of international trafficking of drugs. The haulage driver was transferred to Civitavecchia prison, at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The proceeding is currently in the preliminary investigation stage. The principle of the presumption of innocence applies to the person under investigation until a final court ruling.
