Prato, detainee attempts escape from emergency department: officer fires, wounded in thigh
A 22-year-old Moroccan arrested for drug offences near Dogaia prison was shot in the leg by an officer whilst attempting to flee Prato hospital's emergency department.

Tg24.sky.it reports that on Sunday 16 August, a 22-year-old man, a Moroccan citizen already detained in Dogaia prison and released last June, was wounded in the thigh by a gunshot fired by a penitentiary police officer inside the emergency department of Prato hospital.
The 22-year-old had been arrested in the afternoon near the prison, caught throwing packages of drugs over the prison wall. During the initial chase he fell, suffering an injury, and officers therefore transported him to the emergency department to receive necessary medical treatment.
It was there that the man attempted to escape. He reportedly got up from the stretcher, activated a fire extinguisher to create confusion and ran towards the exit. Officers pursued him, ordering him to stop. One of them fired two shots: one struck the man in the thigh, the other reportedly hit a wall or the ceiling. The incident occurred between the hot chamber and the decontamination room, near triage.
The wounded man was conscious at the time of rescue. The entire emergency department area was closed immediately following the incident and emergencies were temporarily diverted to hospitals in Florence and Pistoia.
The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. Authorities are conducting checks to precisely reconstruct the phases of the escape attempt and establish what occurred in the moments preceding the shots.
