Spirits stolen and security guard assaulted: Vicenza Police stop two accomplices
The State Police of Vicenza arrested, in the late afternoon of Thursday, a man and a woman accused jointly of improper robbery against a supermarket in Viale Mercato Nuovo. This is communicated by questure.poliziadistato.it in the official report of the operation.
The alarm was raised shortly after 18.00, when a security guard noticed a man moving suspiciously between the shelves. After momentarily losing sight of him, the security guard discovered that the subject had concealed numerous bottles of spirits in a bag and was leaving through an emergency exit.
Once discovered, the man attempted to flee. During the pursuit he threw a bottle at the security guard and, once caught, engaged in a struggle in an attempt to keep possession of the stolen goods. At that same moment an accomplice came into action who, taking advantage of the confusion, recovered the bag with the stolen merchandise and quickly moved away with the man.
Decisive proved to be the cooperation of a motorist present at the scene: the citizen immediately contacted 113 and followed the movements of the two suspects, updating the Questura Operations Room in real time. The information provided allowed patrol cars to converge in the area of Viale Verona, where the two were located and stopped.
At the time of the check the woman still had the stolen goods with her: eleven bottles of spirits with a total value of approximately 129 euros. The reconstruction of the episode was subsequently corroborated by testimonies collected on the spot and by footage recorded by the dashcam of the motorist who had followed the incident.
In consideration of the violence exercised against the security officer and the contribution provided by the accomplice in the recovery of the merchandise, both were arrested in flagrante delicto for improper robbery in concert.
On the order of the Judicial Authority, the man — a Zimbabwean citizen, born in 1999 — was taken to the House of Detention of Vicenza, whilst the woman, Italian, born in 1979, was taken to the House of Detention of Verona. Both remain at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Under the principle of presumption of innocence, the guilt of persons under investigation will be definitively ascertained only in the event of an irrevocable sentence of condemnation.
