Rimini State Police arrested a man of Moroccan nationality on 24 August on suspicion of robbery, as reported by Google News IT — Crime (it). The incident occurred around 19:00 in the Torre Pedrera area.
A patrol from the General Prevention and Public Emergency Office of Rimini Police Headquarters responded after a beachgoer reported being the victim of theft. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found a group of three people attempting to apprehend a North African man who was attempting to flee.
According to the reconstruction of events, the victim had left their backpack on a table on the beach, with the mobile phone in the side pockets. After noticing the man lingering nearby, they became aware of the telephone's disappearance and began searching for it together with the local lifeguard. The two had reached the suspected perpetrator, but he reacted by striking the lifeguard with several slaps in an attempt to escape.
The man continued to behave violently and aggressively towards those present. Upon the arrival of police vehicles, he abandoned a towel on the ground inside which the mobile phone was hidden, subsequently recovered by officers and returned to its rightful owner. The officers then restrained the suspect and took him to Police Headquarters for fingerprinting procedures.
Checks carried out on inter-agency information systems revealed that the man had numerous criminal convictions and police records for offences against the person and property. He was arrested for the crime of robbery and held in the custody cells at Police Headquarters pending the validation hearing.
The presumption of innocence applies to persons under investigation and on trial.
