Ten antique paintings, with an estimated value of €90,000, have been recovered by Romanian authorities from the properties of several Romanian citizens. The artworks had been stolen from a residence in Italy, as reported by G4Media.ro.
According to the investigation, the paintings were stolen on 23 August 2024 from a house located in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, before being illegally brought into Romania. The total damage exceeds €90,000, according to information released by the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police (IGPR).
On Monday and Tuesday, investigators carried out several raids at addresses located in Constanța County, where they found the paintings along with various computing devices and storage media.
Additionally, investigators are proceeding against four Romanian citizens residing in Constanța for aggravated theft and unlawful importation of cultural goods into Romanian territory.
The paintings have been recovered and handed over to Italian authorities. Representatives of the IGPR, the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Constanța Court, the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, the Office of the Attaché for Internal Affairs at the Embassy of the Italian Republic in Romania, as well as representatives of the Bucharest City Museum attended the handover ceremony.
International cooperation with Italian authorities took place through official channels of judicial and police cooperation, with the secure exchange of information accomplished through Europol tools.
