In the southern city of Reggio Calabria, authorities have concluded a major anti-drug and anti-mafia operation. During the intervention, carried out on Tuesday, 79 people were arrested. The local prosecutor's office clarified that 73 suspects were placed in pre-trial detention in prison, whilst six others were placed under house arrest. The news was reported by the APA agency and covered by the portal Aktuality.sk.
The operation targeted the powerful De Stefano, Tegano and Condello clans, all part of the Calabrian criminal organisation 'Ndrangheta. The arrested individuals face charges including, amongst others, mafia association, trafficking in narcotic substances, extortion, robbery and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to the findings of lengthy investigations, the criminal syndicates managed an extensive network of illicit economic activities. Their business dealings ranged from drug smuggling to protection rackets exercised against merchants and entrepreneurs.
The 'Ndrangheta is today considered the most powerful of the major Italian mafia organisations. Alongside it operate the Camorra of Naples, Cosa Nostra of Sicily and the smaller Sacra Corona Unita, active in the Apulia region.
