Twelve arrests for transnational trafficking of contaminated waste

Since the early hours of this morning the Carabinieri of the Command for Environmental Protection and Energy Security have executed a precautionary order against twelve individuals, as part of an investigation into illicit waste trafficking involving Italy, Austria, Germany and Croatia.

According to ANSA Cronaca, the proceeding is coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia and Counter-Terrorism Office of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Trento and has been conducted since 2022 by the Ecological Operations Unit Carabinieri in Trento. The investigations have uncovered a so-called "black chain" of pyro-gasification ash, through which waste with a high content of organic pollutants and dioxins was transformed and commercialised as green products: briquettes for barbecues, soil amendments for agricultural land, additives for concrete and CO₂ quotas to be traded on the market.

The operation has engaged over 100 military personnel of the Carabinieri. Further details will be made known during a press conference scheduled for 10.30 at the Public Prosecutor's Office in Trento.
