Unrest at Catanzaro House of Detention
Detainees from the "Homogeneous Network" unit at Catanzaro House of Detention engaged in a violent protest action, seizing a section, destroying video surveillance systems and causing significant damage to the facility. This was reported by ANSA Cronaca, citing Pasquale Montesano, assistant general secretary of Osapp, the prison police union.
The situation returned to normal thanks to the intervention of officers. "Only the extraordinary professionalism and composure of the prison police prevented the worst," Montesano declared, clarifying that no officers were injured and that those responsible had already been transferred to other facilities.
Organised crime alert
Montesano emphasised that the incident confirms what Osapp had already reported during a recent inspection visit to the institution. "The fury of the detainees, largely non-EU nationals, which targeted not only the cameras but also furnishings and structures of the section, demonstrates total brazenness," the union representative stated. The most alarming aspect, according to Montesano, is that "organised crime involvement cannot be ruled out at all, with the intention of exploiting these fringes to destabilise an already extremely weak management and security system".
The question also remains open regarding the actual functioning of dynamic surveillance systems at the time of the incident, which has always been disputed by Osapp under these operational conditions.
Request for an extraordinary plan for Calabria
Montesano requested an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio. According to the union representative, "the women and men of the Corps in Calabria are exposed to serious, daily and no longer tolerable geopolitical and criminal risks". Osapp intends to ask the two government representatives for "an extraordinary plan for Calabria" with urgent structural interventions to protect prison service personnel.
