Rome, water leak uncovers drug stash: 27 kg of hashish seized, one arrest

Water infiltration brings to light a hashish storage facility in a Roman condominium

A routine intervention for a water leak in a building in the Esposizione area of Rome concluded with the seizure of 27 kilograms of hashish and the arrest of a 39-year-old man. This is reported by questure.poliziadistato.it, which reconstructs in detail the discovery made by officers of the Flying Squad patrol unit in the evening.

The report came in late in the evening: copious infiltrations from a room on the second floor were already flooding the staircase and the flat below. The officers, who had arrived on scene, attempted to contact the occupant of the building, who was found to be absent. With the assistance of the Fire Department, they gained access to the flat.

Once inside, the strong odour of hashish and marijuana guided the police officers to the bedroom, which had been converted into a drug storage facility. Among wardrobes, holdalls and bags, hundreds of blocks of hashish already marked and ready for distribution were hidden, along with packaging material and tools used to sustain the drug trafficking supply chain.

Witness statements collected from residents of the building contributed to outlining the context: several tenants had noticed over time a suspicious coming and going of people at that flat, described as apparently nondescript.

The 39-year-old, a Roman born in 1986, was located shortly afterwards at another address in the capital. He was in possession of the keys to the flat, an element that consolidated the investigative picture. The man is now seriously suspected of the crime of possession with intent to distribute narcotic substances. His arrest was subsequently validated by the judicial authority in the courtrooms of Piazzale Clodio.

It is clarified that the investigative evidence described pertains to the preliminary investigation phase and that, for the suspect, the principle of presumption of innocence applies until a possible definitive finding through an irrevocable sentence of conviction.
