A 52-year-old woman from Romania has received a 15-year prison sentence in the Italian city of Bari. The sentence was handed down for the crime of aggravated slavery involving the sexual exploitation of a young compatriot who was only 17 years old at the time of the events in 2010.
The case dates back 16 years and initially involved four other people. Among these, one has already been definitively convicted for complicity in prostitution, whilst the others were never found and, consequently, were never tried, according to Italian press reports.
The indictment shows that the 52-year-old woman allegedly "purchased" the adolescent in Romania. After transporting her to Italy, to Bari, she forced her to engage in prostitution. The judges ruled that the defendant was also guilty of aggravated sexual violence, as she forced the 17-year-old to endure abuse.
The victim was reportedly held in isolation for several months in an apartment with metal doors and barred windows. She was only allowed to leave the flat to engage in prostitution.
The magistrates also imposed a ban on exercising parental authority and holding any position in schools or institutions attended by minors. The reasoning behind the decision must be filed within 90 days.
