An operation by carabinieri from the Special Operations Group is underway at the residences of a former healthcare executive from Castelvetrano. The 85-year-old, long retired from working life, is suspected of having provided support to the Cosa Nostra criminal organisation.
The investigation forms part of the complex work carried out by the Palermo prosecutor's office, headed by Maurizio De Lucia with the assistance of prosecutors Gianluca De Leo and Piero Padova, to dismantle the protection system that allowed the high-profile fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro to remain at large for decades. Documents seized following the arrest of the mafia boss apparently revealed the role of this professional, identified by the nickname of a well-known aged cheese.
In particular, a letter never delivered addressed to the boss's sister contained precise instructions on how to contact the doctor to obtain a substantial sum of money. The text ruled out the possibility that anyone could create difficulties for the financier and provided for the repayment of the entire amount in reduced instalments, to be handed over to a person indicated by the name of a red summer fruit.
