A young man from Romania was stopped on Friday evening at the Neuenburg am Rhein border crossing, located in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. Driving a vehicle coming from France, he was attempting to enter German territory when federal officers subjected him to a check.
The check revealed that the 28-year-old appeared in the Schengen database with an international arrest warrant. He is currently detained in a prison facility awaiting his extradition to the state that convicted him.
In 2023, an Italian court had found him guilty of having drugged a man in order to seize the contents of his safe. The stolen goods amounted to €115,000 in cash and savings bonds. However, before beginning to serve his sentence, he had managed to disappear and remain at large from law enforcement.
The police operation brought his escape to an end. Now German authorities must complete the necessary procedures to hand him over to the Italian judicial authorities.
