Tragedy in Casoria: 16-year-old dies after eating ice cream
Adriano d'Orso, 16 years old, from Casoria, died on the evening of 17 May after consuming an ice cream cone at a gelateria in his neighbourhood. According to ANSA Cronaca, the boy was allergic to lactose and regularly visited that establishment, confident that he could safely choose lactose-free flavours produced on the premises.
Friends who were present took him immediately to his father's home, but Adriano's condition was already critical upon arrival. An attempt to administer cortisone to him yielded no results. The emergency services, which arrived at the scene, could only confirm his death.
The carabinieri of Casoria, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Napoli Nord, have launched an investigation and ordered the seizure of the body. The body is in the mortuary in Giuliano in Campania, at the disposal of the medical examiner for the autopsy. Investigators have also taken samples of the flavours consumed by the boy from the gelateria for analysis.
Francesco Petruzzi, the lawyer appointed by Adriano's mother to follow the legal proceedings, stated: "These tests and the autopsy will be decisive in understanding what happened and establishing any responsibility. On our part, no theories until we receive answers on the investigations ordered by the magistrate. Then we will move accordingly."
The fundamental questions remain unanswered: whether there was an error in the preparation of the ice cream, a mix-up of containers, or whether the death is unrelated to the lactose allergy.
The news has deeply affected Casoria, a municipality of over 73,000 inhabitants in the Naples metropolitan area. Mayor Raffaele Bene expressed the city's condolences: "There are reports that a community would never want to receive, especially when they concern a young man. The sudden death of Adriano leaves enormous pain that runs through the entire city and deeply affects each of us." The mayor added: "Casoria today mourns one of its sons and does so with a heart full of sadness."
