Cocaine hidden in pellets: major seizure at Gioia Tauro
Approximately 113 kilograms of highly pure cocaine from South America have been seized at Gioia Tauro port, according to ANSA Cronaca. The operation was conducted jointly by the Financial Police and the Customs and Monopolies Agency.
The drugs were concealed within a container filled with pellets imported from Latin America and destined for the Italian market. During port handling monitoring activities, the cargo was scanned using equipment available to the customs office, with support from the Financial Police's dog-handler units: the checks made it possible to identify the illicit cargo.
According to investigators' estimates, the seized cocaine could have yielded criminal organisations approximately €20 million once placed on the market.
Since the start of 2025, the Financial Police and the Customs Agency have collectively intercepted over four and a half tonnes of cocaine at Gioia Tauro port.
