Valentina D'Acunto, mother of the two sisters Alisya and Sarah Di Giacinto who were found after 15 days of disappearance, has been remanded in custody together with her partner and the woman's father. The three are under investigation for the crime of aggravated kidnapping, committed "jointly with each other and with other persons".
The two girls, aged 16 and 12, vanished during the night between 6 and 7 June from the children's home in Civitella Alfedena, in the province of L'Aquila. They were traced the evening of 21 June in Formia, in the province of Latina, inside a public housing flat in the Rio Fresco district.
The investigation carried out by the carabinieri made it possible to reconstruct a genuine network of family complicity. The girls' mother allegedly acted with the help of other relatives and acquaintances, moving between Scauri and Formia to keep the minors hidden. The kidnapping was classified as aggravated by the involvement of multiple persons.
The chief prosecutor of the Republic of Sulmona, Luciano D'Angelo, formalised the charges against the three arrested. Following the interrogations, the two men were transferred to Sulmona prison, whilst the mother was taken to Teramo.
The investigation is continuing in order to identify any other accomplices and to reconstruct with precision the chain of assistance that made the removal of the girls from the children's home possible. The elderly woman who was hosting the sisters in Formia is under investigation but not in custody.
